SOLSTICE – MINIMILIST DOWNLIGHT FAMILY
Feilo Sylvania wanted to develop and new family of architectura downlights for their Concord brand based on high technical performance while taking influence from the principles for the circular economy. In addition, SDA were tasked to create a design that would make the product easily recognisable, and one which could be implemented across all variants. The Solstice family was unveiled at the end of 2023, first to launch in the range were the recessed downlights. Surface and pendant versions, alongside smaller diameter recessed Solstice luminaires are due for release later this year.

Essential components of the design brief were to achieve class-leading efficacies based on a minimum colour rendering index of Ra90 for all of the products. A low-profile housing was also important, alongside low illuminance levels at 65° viewing angle. SDA also needed to investigate how we could begin to address the principles of the circular economy within this product range. We’re very proud of the sustainability focus that has been integrated into the Solstice range, as the range grows so to will our commitment to ensuring the technological offerings support a sustainable future. Some of these highlights include a product that is easy to disassemble for future repair and upgrade, no adhesives used in any variant with common fasteners throughout and a robust product to ensure product longevity and enable future re-use or repairs.

In addition to the sustainable elements of the Solstice family, attention was paid to the function and aesthetics; with the Solstice family featuring a unique detail – a floating reflector. This detail is common across all product variants including pendants, providing a subtle but distinct family aesthetic.
