CBU-BOX, EXPANDING THE USIBILITY OF CASAMBI
Bourne out of a previous SDA in-house development, the Casambi enclosure was conceived to enable the rapid transformation of a luminaire into a Smart enabled product. It’s application is relevant to both pre-installed and existing luminaires as well as luminaires still in their development phase. For OEMs, the concept would allow legacy products to be easily converted to a wireless Casambi controlled luminaire with no additional design or tooling investment. It should also allow newly developed products to be supplied wireless ready by a simple addition of the retrofit module.

Co-development with Holders Components to help realise the solution, the design development and research was undertaken by SDA to realise a fully functioning prototype. Although a simple box in appearance, the design intent of the enclosure was to make the 2 parts as smart as possible minimising assembly complexity and negate the need for additional parts. The base moulding has integrated cable restraints with the internal terminal blocks being held in position by snap fit features. The lid itself has a snap fit feature to provide initial fixing during the assembly process. Built into the lid is an access panel with a living hinge feature allowing access to the mains termination for the installing contractor. The combination of many different fasteners and moving features in a single moulding greatly reduced the concepts complexity and minimised costs.
